Teeth sealing is a way to prevent cavities and is done both for deciduous teeth (baby teeth) and the permanent ones, usually immediately after they erupted. Permanent teeth are sealed as follows: molars at 6 years and 12 years, premolars at the age range between 6-15 years.
The sealing of pits and occlusal fissures (the one we are chewing with) is considered the safest method of primary prophylaxis, an immunization method of these surfaces.
Can be sealed only teeth that don't have dental cavities, which are cleaned beforehand through professional brushing by the dentist. Used composite resins are transparent or opaque, with a high level fluorine glass ionomer cements. Sealed teeth must be checked periodically!
Sealing is a prevention method recommended to all children who want to get rid of caries on the occlusal surfaces but is obligatory in the following cases:
• children with multiple cavities at the level of temporary teeth;
• special needs children who can't perform an appropriate oral hygiene;
• children who consume large amounts of sweets.
Sealing cancels the risk of tooth decay on the occlusal surfaces (those we chew with) but not on other surfaces, so brushing and use of additional dental hygiene (dental floss and mouthwash) remains of major importance, as well as professional teeth fluoride treatment.
